The All New Land Rover Discovery Sport Wins Safety Award at the 2015 What Car, Car of the Year Awards

Land Rover take home two top awards including the all new 'Safety Award' at this years What Car Awards

The New Land Rover Discovery Sport

The Land Rover Discovery Sport has already begun collating awards before its official release later this month. At the 2015 What Car Awards which were held at the Grosvenor House Hotel on the 7th January, the Discovery Sport won the 'Safety Award' the first winner of the brand new award.

This is the first year the safety award has been introduced by What Car in association with Thatcham Research Centre. The criteria for this award focused on such factors as Euro NCAP ratings, and AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking). The Discovery Sport was awarded a maximum 5-star rating by Euro NCAP last year, this included scoring a very impressive 93% for adult crash protection and 86% for child protection. The Discovery Sport has also been installed with a raft of new technologies to make driving as safe and as comfortable as possible for driver and passengers. New safety features include a digital stereo camera that alerts drivers to potential collision hazards, and for the first time ever in a small SUV there is the option of having a pedestrian airbag which deploys automatically from the rear section of the bonnet. Other safety systems include Dynamic Stability Control, Electronic Traction Control, Roll Stability Control, Anti-lock Braking Systems, Reverse Traffic Detection, Emergency Brake Lights, Lane Departure Warning and Seatbelt Reminders.

Speaking of the safety award Director of Land Rover Programmes Murray Dietsch said: "Winning this award provides Discovery Sport with valuable, independent validation of its exceptional quality and ability. It reflects the extreme lengths we go to, to ensure safety provisions go beyond what is required, and what customers expect. "Safety was a fundamental priority in the development of Discovery Sport as a true family vehicle. This award rewards the no-compromise, pioneering work we have invested in the model."

'Best Large MPV' - The Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE

The new Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE was also a winner on the night for the second consecutive year, winning 'Best Large MPV'. The new Range Rover has new exciting innovations making it one of the best in its class. The new generation Range Rover sees the introduction of All-Terrain Progress Control, a system that allows automatic vehicle speed control when negotiating steep gradients and rough or low-grip surfaces. A new Head-Up Display will project information about the cars performance at the driver's eye line when driving meaning they can keep their eyes firmly on the road.

Speaking of their decision to awards the Range Rover the 'Best Large MPV' award What Car said: The Range Rover Sport may look pricey next to alternatives such as the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz ML, but you know the minute you get in that it utterly warrants its price. If you've got the money, the Rangie is really in a class of its own."

The What Car Awards are an annual event that brings together the best models from the last 12 months. Manufacturers and the car buying public follow the results closely as they give a good indication of what models will be popular over the coming 12 months. What Car has said that winning one of their prestigious awards could see interest in the particular model increase by a whopping 300%. Last year's winner of 'Overall Car of the Year' the Nissan Qashqai saw interest rise by 312% after its win.

The Land Rover Discovery Sport is now available to order with deliveries expected at the end of January. For more information on the Discovery Sport or any of our Land Rover cars, contact a member of the Taggarts Land Rover team today.
